5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE GETTING YOUR CAR TUNED!

1. TORQUE, Torque is a measure of rotating force

Torque is a measurement of rotating force, If you try to put too much force on a rotating shaft what do you think it’s going to do? Refer to the image for the perfect demonstration.
Our engines are capable of making much more torque than the manufacturers release them with but they are tuned with longevity in mind, There is a right and wrong way to tune these vehicles to be safe and reliable. What you want to see is a nice gradual increase in the torque and power curves. Too often we see a 300% increase of torque down low. The long term effect of that would be damaged driveline components., IE gearboxes, clutches, diffs ETC

2. AFR (AIR FUEL RATIO)

You’ll have no doubt heard people talking about engines running ‘a bit rich’ or ‘a bit lean’, but what does this actually mean? And what effect does it have on your car?
Well, when you here people talking about things being ‘rich’ or ‘lean’ they are actually referring to amount of fuel present in the air/fuel mixture entering the engine. This is also known as the air/fuel ratio, or AFR for short.
By ‘a bit rich’ we mean there is too much fuel present, and by ‘a bit lean’ we mean there is not enough fuel present, therefore the air/fuel ratio is incorrect and needs adjusting to get the balance right again.
The AFR is an extremely critical factor when tuning diesel vehicles as more fuel cause more heat, The ideal Air Fuel Ratio once tuned is 18:1. 18 Parts of air to 1 part of fuel.
If this is not correct you will no doubt end up with a dead engine, Again be very careful who you trust your vehicle with, they are not a cheap asset. Getting the job right the first time is the only way

3. EDUCATION! IS YOUR TUNER EDUCATED??

Tuning for a long time was a “black art” that not many people knew much about. A lot of the guys that get involved with the tuning scene bought a Dyno and engine tuning software and learnt from trial and error. This is not the correct way to learn and is dangerous.

Have piece of mind that our technicians are qualified mechanics before they are further educated in tuning. Our technicians are trained to an international level by the industry leaders from the USA and Italy. Be sure that whoever your going to let tune your car has a high level of education in the field.

4. MASTER TUNERS VS SLAVE TUNERS

Some workshops purchase SLAVE tools as they don’t have the knowledge or experience to tune the vehicles themselves. A SLAVE tool reads an encrypted file from the vehicle that can only be opened and modified by the MASTER tool holder. In most cases either a tune file service from overseas or someone that no one has ever heard of is actually tuning YOUR vehicle.
Be extremely careful to who you trust your vehicle to and make sure they in fact are a master tool holder and qualified to tune your vehicle

5. THE HOLY GRAIL (THE DYNO)

The dyno is a tool used to simulate road driving conditions so we can put your car to the test to be sure that our tune is 100% safe and reliable so you have full reliability and safety with your vehicle’s engine.
For anyone that’s thinking about getting a “TUNE” loaded in their car and drive away without checking things like (Air Fuel Ratio) and boost THINK TWICE
